Briefing on the National RFID Roadmap

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology has many promising applications including warehousing and distribution, supply chain management, asset and animal tracking, theft prevention and security. The technology is already in use in countries like South Korea, Japan, US and in Europe on a viable commercial basis.

RFID requires two components, a tag that is attached to an object (e.g. trade item, package and pallet) and a reader. A tag consists of a chip that contains identifying information about the object to which it is attached and an antenna to communicate that information via radio waves. A reader creates a radio frequency field that detects radio waves. When a tag passes through a radio frequency field generated by a compatible reader, the tag reflects back to the reader the identifying information about the object to which it is attached, thus identifying the object. The advent of RFID has given the companies the benefit of increased visibility in their supply chain.

GS1 Malaysia in collaboration with the Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (SKMM or Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Malaysia (MCMC)) is organising a briefing on the National RFID Roadmap. The purpose of the briefing is to present the state of readiness of RFID technology in the country, why RFID technology is important and the steps the government are undertaking to build the industry’s readiness towards RFID Technology.
