Cause and Effect: Who is the real Agent Provocateur?

Someone by the name of Richard Tallboys asked Alan Wood who in turned asked Bro. Habibur Rahman (UPM Alumnus) to enlighten him on the following question: What are your friend's views on the current controversy in Malaysia. May Christians use the word "Allah" when referring to God?"

It is no secret that the Christian Churches, especially the Catholic Church has been gradually losing their followers and congregations. It is the same here in Malaysia. On the other hand Muslims are getting more religious world wide. I see this tendency in every country and city I have travelled to in recent times.
Mosques from Karachi to Tehran, and even in Europe are overflowing with worshippers on Fridays. In Malaysia we never seem to have enough Mosques to accomodate Friday congregations. More Muslims now pray in mosques for their five daily prayers although this is not mandatory.

Threatened by the declining numbers in the congregations, the Catholic Church has to find ways to convert people from other faiths. Now let's look at the demographics of the Malaysian Peoples :

1) 67 % are Malay Muslim. All share the same faith and pray in one common Sunni protocol. The State Religion is Islam and the constitutional Head of Islam is the King and the Nine State Sultans who are elected King by five year rotation terms.

2) About 24 % of Malaysians are ethnic Chinese who practice several religions namely : Bhuddism, Taoism, Confusionism, Christianity and the rest "Free Thinkers "............Oh yes .........the Chinese have another religion........ called Money!

3) About 8 % of Malaysians are ethnic Indians who mainly practice Hinduism and Christianity.

Breakdown by religious groupings show that 67 % are Muslims , 7 % Hindu and about 4 % are " Church Going " Christians. I say " Church Going " because this is the only way to differentiate between a Christian by faith and one by use of a Christian first name like " John Wong " or " Alice Lee " , but who remain Bhudists or Free Thinkers.

So in reality the numbers of Christians in Malaysia are a single digit % minority. My hunch is that this number is on the decline amongst young non Muslim Malaysians.

I speculate that the powers in the Vatican would leave the propagation of the Catholic Faith to the wisdom of the respective Bishops in their host Countries. If I was the Bishop of the Catholic Church in Malaysia , I would know that the main " target market " for conversion and missionary work is the Muslims. This Missionary work by Christians ( mainly the Catholics ) have been going on in this Country since the 13th Century in Melaka from the invasion of Melaka and its colonization by the Portugese Admiral Vasco da Gama: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/explorers/page/d/dagama.shtml;

which was followed by Jesuit Priest St. Francis Xavier: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Xavier.
St. Francis's remains were originally burried in St. Pauls Church in Melaka and exumed later to his final resting place at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa, India.

Missionary work by Christian priests was active in the East Malaysian States of Sarawak and British Borneo, which was mainly inhabited by pagan Natives. Islam did not have a foothold in these vast remote regions until the Malays migrated from Indonesian Islands and Malaya back in the early 1900's. By that time Christianity has established itself as a major religion amongst the "natives " who are Iban and Dayak in Sarawak; and Kadazan Dusun in Sabah (former British Borneo).

Due to the "maturity "of Christianity in Sarawak and Sabah and due to the familiarity of the Malay reference to the word " Allah " , it was natural for the Christian priests to refer to God as Allah in these States. Nobody took any notice of this and it never became an issue , because the use was contained within the confines of sermons and to exclusive Christian congregations.

It was when the Catholic Church in Kuala Lumpur decided to use the same method of conversion by the use of this word in their Weekly Newspaper ; that angered mainstream Muslim Malays here. They see this as an intrusion of their Faith , a direct attempt at missionary work target towards Malay Muslims and as a direct strategy for conversion. The Catholic Church naturally denies this.

The Malay Muslims say that it is not what is done that they object to as much as what is seen to be done , which is beyond the borders of subtlety. That breached the tolerance level of usually docile Malays who take their religion very seriously. The anger from demonstrators is a reaction to what they see as method to convert ; which was successful in Sarawak and Sabah.

It made matters worse when the Catholic Church took the issue to the Courts and obtained judgement in their favor; but the judge is a Chinese and a non Muslim. Constrained by fear of contempt of court, Malay Muslims now seek remedy of their case to their King while abiding by their right of appeal to the Appeals Court and if necessary the Federal ( Supreme ) Court.

He is where the dilemma will ensue if common sense does not prevail:

a) The Appeals Court upholds the judgement of the lower Court. This will be followed by final adjudication by the Federal Court.

b) The Rulers Council ( Council of Nine Sultans ) will meet soon to decide on the issue and decrees against the use of the word Allah by non Muslims.

Here is what may happen:

1) The rule of law allows compliance after judgement by the highest Court. If the Federal Court upholds the judgement by the Appeals Court; the Catholic Church will prevail. The Feredal Court in it wisdom can make provisions or conditions to prevent a worsening situation in the interests of peace and National unity.

2) The decree by the Ruler's Council to stop the use of the word Allah has to be implemented (constitutionally) by the Government. Since Islam is the State Religion, the decree is sacred and mandatory to all Malaysian Muslims, and is expected to be respected by non Muslims. To defy the decree will be in violation of Sedition Laws , a capital crime in Malaysia.

3) Non Muslims may not be morally bound by the Decree but may face legal and social implications on the defiance of such rulings. If this happens the Muslims will react and unite against those who they see as "enemies " of Islam and invoke " jihad ". I pray this does not happen.

4) Constitutionally even the Bishop of the Catholic Church is a subject of the Malaysian King, and therefore expected to demonstrate loyalty towards the Kimg. To not do so, will be to his discredit.

The only peaceful solution is for the Church to be magnanimous to the rule and wishes of the majority, as much as the Muslims in Europe are subjected to prohibitions such as wearing of Islamic apparel and minarets in Mosques. While Musilm minorities as citizens living in Christian dominated countries are told " When in Rome ....do as the Romans do "; the Malay Muslims in Malaysia are telling these Catholics the same. To ignore such pleas is to stir the hornets nest. Malaysia has always been proud of it various races living in harmony for Centuries and serves as a model of peace.

It is ironic that such a few has caused so much grief and pain to so many.

I write this as clearly as I know how to , so that if ( God forbid ) this matter becomes a global issue and politicized further by the Catholic Church......you my friends at least know why!

In closing;......I paste what I wrote recently to my Malaysian friends who are of all races:

Quote:Please remember that this whole issue was started by the Catholic Church by being adamant about their choice of the use of the word Allah. The demonstrations we see up till now are a mere reaction to this act ( by the Church ) in spite of many passive objections by Muslims before the judgement. The post judgement demonstrations are an escalation of the same issue. Who made this into a big deal ? It looks like it is the Malays; but who started this ? It was the Church.

As always, the voilence involving Muslims from Gaza to Mindanao to South Thailand and the victims of Al Queda are all without exception the reactions by Muslims to what they see as injustices and wrongdoing by others. They did not start this. All of them lived in peace until others provoked them to turn to Jihad as the only means left. Jihad is not an initiative, but a reaction towards injustice by others towards them.

I ask again ....and you should too. Ask the Church why it is so important to use the Allah word in the Herald Weekly. Will Catholicism be less appealing if they remained as they did before the use of the word Allah ? I just want to know. We ( Muslim and Christians ) are all " Ahlil Kitab " ( Children of the Book ). Why are we quarelling as adversaries ? OR are we quarelling because of a few ego inflated personalities fueled by selfish politicians take joy from seeing God fearing people enjoy a good relationship. These people should be punished for what they did. They are the perpetrators.

The demonstrators will go away as fast as they appeared if we put a stop to this folly. Let's go after the real bad guys ! In this case I'm afraid the Malays just reacted to what they see as an infringement of what they hold sacred. The bad guys are those with a hidden agenda! Jesus said that if one slaps on you ...give the other cheek. What happened to " give the other cheek " ? .......and who gave the slap in this case ?

Healing by Divine Guidance

ART OF HEALING By Dr AMIR FARID ISAHAK

Quranic healing can complement modern medicine.

TODAY, I continue sharing with you about the healing work of Tuan Haji Lokman, Quranic healer and founder of Perubatan Syifa Al-Hidayah in Selangor. His story is a good guide for those who would like to become healers themselves. Please refer to the previous article (Quranic healers, Fit4Life, Dec 20, 2009) for the introduction about him.

While there are many other Quranic healers around, I am most fascinated by him because he can accurately “scan” his patients to confirm their ailments, and to see the relative importance of the spiritual versus physical components of the maladies. He then prescribes Quranic verses for each patient.

While there are “healing verses” useful for everyone, he also receives Divine Guidance during the consultation as to which other verses to prescribe to the patient.

While many forms of faith healing involve spirits or jinns to assist in the treatment, his method is strictly by Divine Guidance; and the Quranic verses, selawat (salutations to the Prophet) and supplications as medicine. He did not receive the healing gift all at once. It came gradually as he persisted on religious duties and devotional acts. In particular, he would receive further empowerment each time he returns from the Hajj or Umrah (minor Hajj). His diagnosis and treatment became more refined, accurate, and effective.

Some of the patients I describe below are featured in the documentary series Syifa, shown every Saturday at 7.30pm on Astro 106 from Dec 26, 2009, (13 episodes). As some of the patients do not want their identities to be known, I will only refer to them by their initials.

Most of the patients came to him only after medical treatment had not given satisfactory results. Some continue with their medical treatments concurrently, while others totally switched to his Quranic healing method. However, he never says that medical treatment is unnecessary.

I have described a wide range of ailments helped by Quranic healing. Actually any ailment can be helped, since we believe that God is the ultimate healer, and he can decide to cure every disease and every ailment. The human healer is only his instrument.

Brain tumour

ZZ had undergone radiotherapy for a brain tumour but it didn’t completely disappear. So she decided to seek Tuan Haji Lokman’s help. After about one year of Quranic healing, the brain scan showed that the tumour had disappeared.

Breast cancer

AI had breast cancer, and was undergoing diagnostic tests at the hospital when she was brought to see him. Even before the doctors told her the extent of her cancer, he “scanned” her and correctly told her the stage of her cancer, and advised her to agree to the medical therapies, while concurrently following his Quranic healing prescription. It is still too early to claim a cure, as it is still less than five years since treatments began, but whatever is the outcome of her condition, Puan AI shared that she immediately felt comforted and peaceful once she recited the verses prescribed for her.

Intestinal obstruction

FA suffered from chronic intestinal obstruction that caused her abdomen to become grossly swollen. Conservative medical treatment failed to solve the problem and her doctors told her she needed surgery. After several months of Quranic healing, she was completely cured.

Ovarian cysts

SM had ovarian cysts, confirmed by her doctor, and was advised surgery. Instead she opted for Quranic healing, and the cysts disappeared after several months.

Slipped disc

AL suffered from multiple slipped discs (L2 to S1). He had pain and numbness below the waist, and limped badly. He was advised surgery, but chose to try Quranic healing. The progress was slow and steady, and he is now able to walk normally with no pain or numbness anymore.

Female infertility

Seven years after her first child was born, SS still failed to conceive in spite of medical treatment. After a year of Quranic healing, she conceived, and has since given birth to her second child.

Depression

ML suffered from severe depression since his student days. He suffered for nine years, and was almost completely cured of this problem after patiently undergoing Quranic healing for two years.

A word of caution

While I am all for the freedom of choice for patients to seek whatever form of treatment to relieve them of their ailments, that choice must be a well-informed choice, and should ideally also be confirmed by other methods. The diagnosis must be accurate, and modern medicine is still the gold-standard for accurate diagnosis, although that is not saying that all medical diagnoses are 100% accurate (recently a woman in Indonesia was sued by a hospital because she exposed the fact that the doctors there misdiagnosed and treated her for dengue, when she actually had mumps).
I would advise that patients always seek medical confirmation of whatever diagnosis given by alternative/complementary health practitioners. I also advise to seek medical opinion on therapy, before deciding which one to choose.

If there are safe, effective, proven treatments (by medical or non-medical methods), then these should be the preferred choice. When it comes to “proven” treatments, most are only found within the ambit of modern medicine, due to the stringent scientific tests required before any treatment is accepted as proven. However, the fact remains that people are flocking to alternative/complementary therapies because modern medicine does not have satisfactory answers for many of our health problems. Otherwise there wouldn’t be a market for such therapies. If non-medical treatment is chosen, the progress of the condition should be confirmed by a medical doctor. For example, a quack healer may mislead a patient into thinking that his cancer is disappearing when actually it is spreading even further. Such a case was told to me during an oncology conference in Kota Bharu two years ago.

I have always harped on the terrible side-effects and poor results of many cancer treatments, even though the future does look bright with cancer genomics and cancer stem-cell therapy being some of the new frontiers. Likewise, I do not think that the current medical model of maintaining patients with hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases, etc, on drugs for life is the ideal situation, when we should be looking for curative solutions – i.e. that restore the patients to normal health without being drug-dependent.

However, for that to happen, the patients themselves must also be disciplined in living a healthy lifestyle (including maintaining the ideal weight and adequate exercise) and a healthy diet (and nutritional supplements if necessary). That may not be possible for everyone, but it has been possible for many who are committed to regain their health. And until we find safe, curative solutions for most diseases, the patients will continue to seek alternative/complementary therapies, including faith healing and Quranic healing.

God's Name: Non-Muslims Calling the Creator "Allah"

Prepared by the Research Committee of IslamToday

The name "Allah" is the Arabic word that refers to the one true God who created the heavens and the Earth – the God of all the Prophets from Adam to Noah to Abraham to Moses to Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them all.

The word Allah comes from the Arabic word “ilâh” meaning “deity, god, divine being” combined with the definite article “al”. Put together, they make “al-Ilâh” or literally “the God” which is then elided together as “Allah”.

Essentially, "Allah" is the literal Arabic equivalent to the English word "God" with a capital "G" while the Arabic word "ilâh" is the literal equivalent of the English word "god" with a lower-case "g".

The Qur'ân uses the name Allah consistently when referring to the message of all of the prophets and to the various beliefs of all of the people.

Even when the Qur'ân quotes people of other religions saying false things about the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth, the word Allah is used.

We have, for example, where certain Jews are quoted as saying: "And the Jews say: 'The hand of Allah is tied up!' Their hands shall be shackled, and may they be cursed for what they say. Nay, both His hands are spread out, He bestows as He pleases." [Sûrah al-Mâ'idah: 64]

We have the Christian doctrine of the trinity conveyed in the following verse: "They surely disbelieve who say: 'Lo! Allah is the third of three' when there is no god but the One Allah. If they desist not from so saying a painful doom will fall on those of them who disbelieve." [Sûrah al-Mâ'idah: 73]

We also have in the Qur'ân: "And the Jews say: 'Ezra is the son of Allah', and the Christians say: 'The Messiah is the son of Allah'." [Sûrah al-Tawbah: 30]

These verses are in Arabic and use the Arabic name Allah. The fact that the Qur'ân does not shy away from using this word even when it speaks about the falsehood of the people of unbelief shows that the name "Allah" is truly universal, and can be used by anyone to refer to the true Creator of the heavens and the Earth.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) always referred to God as Allah when he discussed the beliefs of the Jews and Christians with him. They did so as well.

We have the challenge between the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to the Christians of Najran about their false belief in the divinity of Christ. The Arabs of Najran were Arab and were certainly speaking Arabic.

We read in the Qur'ân where Allah commands His Messenger: “If any one disputes in this matter with thee, now after (full) knowledge hath come to thee, Say: Come! Let us gather together, our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves: then let us earnestly pray. And invoke the curse of Allah on those who lie.” [Sûrah Âl-`Imrân: 61]

The people of Arabia all referred to the Creator of the heavens and the Earth as "Allah", whether they were Jews, Christians, or pagans. This is the reason why, in pre-Islamic times, many people of all three faiths already carried the name `Abd Allah.

They included the Prophet's father `Abd Allah b. `Abd al-Muttalib who died before the Prophet (peace be upon him) was born, as well as the Prophet's cousin `Abd Allah b. Abî Umayyah who only accepted Islam shortly before the conquest of Mecca.

They included the prominent Jewish rabbi of Madinah, `Abd Allah b. Salâm, who became one of the most eminent of the Prophet's Companions. Of course, he had been given the name `Abd Allah by his Jewish family long before Islam.

The measures that have recently been taken in some countries to bar non-Muslims from referring to God as "Allah" in their religious publications are quite unfortunate. The publications is question are ones written in languages where the name used for the Creator of the heavens and the Earth is the name "Allah".

The purpose behind these restrictive measures is the fear that those publications will confuse Muslims who speak those languages and who might read those publications. Be that as it may, the confusion on a global scale which is being caused by the restriction is far worse.

Islamic workers who try convey the message of Islam to Jews and Christians have been struggling against the widely held belief idea that the god of the Muslims is some exotic deity other than the one who sent Abraham, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them all). It has been a long and uphill effort. These recent measures in some countries to ban non-Muslims form using the name Allah have resulted in confirming and entrenching those false suspicions among non-Muslims.

It is the duty of Muslims today to redouble their efforts to teach the people of the world that there is only one true God who created the heavens and the Earth; that all of the prophets and messengers were sent by Him with the same essential teaching: to worship the Creator alone and not set up partners with Him; that Allah is the God of Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus – and Muhammad (peace be upon them all).

And Allah knows best.
